Sign Language Interpreters to join AIIC

The International Association of Conference Interpreters (AIIC) will open its doors to sign language conference interpreters.  This is the result of close cooperation and fruitful discussions between AIIC and the World Association and the European Forum of Sign Language Interpreters.

AIIC represents around 3000 conference interpreters worldwide. WASLI and EFSLI promote the professional interests of sign language interpreters. The three associations share professional concerns such as ethics, advocacy, working conditions, recognition, training and professional development.

The decision to welcome sign language conference interpreters was taken by an overwhelming majority at the AIIC general assembly that is currently being held in Buenos Aires. This will put sign languages on an equal footing with spoken languages within the world of conference interpreting.
