WASLI Oceania Conference @ Tanoa International Hotel
Aug 17 – Aug 19 all-day

Background and aims:
The idea for a regional conference came about at the WASLI Conference in Turkey in 2015. Representatives the Oceania region were present and met to talk about what we would like to see happen in our region. Throughout the Pacific Islands we have many interpreters working in isolation without training or support. The aim of this WASLI Oceania Conference is to bring these interpreters together to receive training and to learn from one another’s experiences.

Almost every year the interpreter associations in Australia (ASLIA) and New Zealand (SLIANZ) hold national professional development conferences. Interpreters from the emerging countries in the Pacific occasionally travel to attend these national conferences and are able to experience the interpreting scene that is current to that country. There would be many benefits for interpreters from the Pacific Islands attending these national conferences, however it is an expensive endeavour and can be somewhat overwhelming and difficult to apply what they have learnt to their local context back home. Therefore the aim in holding a regional conference in Fiji is to provide relevant workshops and training for emerging interpreters but at the same time providing professional development for the trained and experienced interpreters.

As this is the very first time our region has held an interpreters conference it will be a fantastic opportunity for interpreters to connect, network, share resources and knowledge, form friend-ships and support each other. This is why the theme for the conference is ‘No interpreter is an Island’.
